Creating a new Standard Assignment

This guide helps instructors access and create a new Standard Assignment in Turnitin Feedback Studio. Use it to choose the correct assignment type, add required assignment details, review optional settings, and copy an existing assignment when available.

The new Standard Assignment is only currently available for Turnitin Feedback Studio licenses using the Turnitin website or an LTI 1.3 integration.

In this guide:

Access the new Standard Assignment

Accessing the new version of the Standard Assignment will look different depending on your institution’s account settings. You may be taken directly to the assignment creation page if it is the only assignment available to you, or you may need to locate the Standard Assignment tile with the New label.

If both the new and classic versions are enabled for your institution:

  1. After you select to create a new Turnitin assignment from your class, a modal will appear that allows you to select the type of assignment you want to create.
  2. A blue banner at the top of the modal indicates that there is a new version of the Standard Assignment available. Select the Try Now button.
  3. Select the Standard Assignment tile with the New label in the top right corner.

Create your assignment

Some assignment details are required to create an assignment. Other settings are optional, but we recommend reviewing them so the assignment meets your requirements.

To create your assignment:

  1. Follow the steps for accessing the new version of the Standard Assignment.
  2. Add a Title for the assignment.
  3. Add Instructions for the assignment. Instructions are visible to students before they begin the assignment.
  4. Review any formatting applied in the instructions box. Students will see formatting such as bold, italics, underline, bulleted lists, numbered lists, hyperlinks, and left, center, or right indentations.
  5. Set the scheduling for the assignment:
    • Start date and time: The date students will be able to start submitting to the assignment.
    • Due date and time: The date by which students will no longer be able to submit to the assignment.
    • Feedback release date and time: The date that any grading and feedback is visible to students. This does not affect when students can view similarity scores.
  6. Set the Max points for the assignment.
  7. Review the other available settings categorized within the dropdowns to customize your assignment to your requirements. You can customize Grading and feedback settings, Submission settings, and Report settings. Learn more about the additional settings.
  8. Upload an assignment template that can be downloaded by your students. Text within the template will be automatically excluded from Similarity Reports. Learn more about templates.
  9. When ready, select Create Assignment.

Copy an assignment

Instructors using Turnitin via an LTI 1.3 integration can use the Assignment Copy tool to copy existing assignments from previous classes instead of creating them from scratch.

For details and steps, see Using the Turnitin Assignment Copy tool in Feedback Studio with LTI 1.3.
